Production of recreational vehicles reaches new record high
More and more Europeans thrilled by camping and caravanning
Jandelsbrunn. Knaus Tabbert, one of the three leading manufacturers of recreational vehicles in Europe, hit new record levels in both revenues and sales. The company increased its revenues over the previous year by 26% to €592 m. In the previous two years, Knaus Tabbert achieved revenues of €391 m and €468 m, which had already established a rapid growth rate. Similarly as dynamic was the increase in the number of manufactured caravans, motorhomes and Caravanning Utility Vehicles (CUVs). A total of 20,823 leisure time vehicles were produced in 2017, about one‐quarter more than in the previous year. Even the profitability reached a record level. The pre‐tax profit (EBITDA) increased by 35% to 54 million euros. The EBITDA margin was therefore at 8.8%.
“2017 was the best year of our history. Revenue and sales reached new highs. Until year’s end, we will make investments totalling €70 m,‟ says Wolfgang Speck, CEO at Knaus Tabbert. „Camping and caravanning are becoming increasingly popular.‟ Young holiday‐goers are increasingly discovering the charm of travelling individually and independently, something the baby boomer generation has long been familiar with and learned to appreciate. The trend towards domestic tourism is an added aspect.”
Knaus Tabbert is growing in a very attractive market environment. In 2017, with almost 200,000 newly registered motorhomes and caravans, the industry reached a record level of registrations in Europe. With an increase of more than 15% to about 63,000 recreational vehicles, in 2017 the initial registrations reached a new record high in the German market. The Caravanning Industry Association of Germany (CIVD) expects that the growth will continue in the coming years. Aside from the demographic development, the difficult situation in many of Europe’s standard holiday destinations have induced a large number of people to discover holidays in recreational vehicles.
Knaus Tabbert offers recreational vehicles under the brand names KNAUS, TABBERT, WEINSBERG, T@B and MORELO. The vehicles meet the tastes of holiday‐goers – whether they are new to camping or have always been a caravan user; whether lifestyle customer or nature lover. With the acquisition of MORELO in 2017, Knaus Tabbert has increased its European market presence in the luxury motorhome segment. In the past years, the vehicles manufactured by MORELO were awarded with the renowned „German Design Award‟.
The planned investments are primarily being made at the HQ and the plant in Jandelsbrunn. One focus will be on the further development of lightweight construction recreational vehicles, such as the ultra‐lightweight KNAUS TRAVELINO caravans. Beyond this, the company is planning on hiring additional employees. Including MORELO, the number of employees across all four sites has increased to 2,500.
